EBB Publishes annual biodiesel production statistics Statistics compiled by the European Biodiesel Board (EBB) indicate that the production of biodiesel in the EU increased from 3.2 to 4.9 million tonnes in 2006 from 185 fully operational biodiesel plants. Currently around 60 new production facilities are under construction adding to the production capacity of around 10 millions tonnes per annum setting the foundation for a strong biodiesel industry that will be able to meet the 2010 EU target within the next year or so. EU Public consultation: Green Paper: The European Research Area: New Perspectives The European Commission invites citizens and other stakeholders to contribute to the development of the European Research Area (ERA) by participating in our online ERA consultation. The consultation takes the form of a questionnaire, the contents of which reflect and expand upon the questions and issues raised in the Green Paper "The European Research Area: New Perspectives".
The results of the online consultation will be used by the Commission, in conjunction with other inputs, to support proposals for the future development of ERA. These proposals will be published in 2008. The public consultation was launched on 1 May 2007 and will be open until 31 August 2007

The Seventh Issue of the BioMatNet Non-Food Agro-Industrial Research CD-ROM was published in May 2007. This CD-ROM is available free of charge to individuals and organisations within European working in the area of non-food use of agricultural and forest products for the production of renewable bioproducts and biofuels. Registration with BioMatNet/EPOBIO is required as is a brief description of the relevance to the work being carried out by the individual or their organisation.
New CORDIS service for the European 'Knowledge-based bio-economy'. The Seventh Framework Programme for research and development (FP7), in funding research under Theme 2 'Food, agriculture and fisheries, and biotechnology', aims to establish and promote a European 'Knowledge-based bio-economy' (KBBE). The CORDIS FP7 Service has launched a new KBBE Service, developed in collaboration with the European Commission's DG Research, to support these aims. 23 May 2007.

On 20 April 2007, the EC launched a public consultation on Biofuels that complements earlier consultations exercises on heating and cooling and biofuels, as well as administrative obstacles to the increased use of renewable energy in electricity generation.

DOE Selects Five Ethanol Conversion Projects for $23 Million in Federal Funding
Projects to Develop Fermentative Organisms to Speed Ethanol Refining
On 27 March 2007, in Washington DC, US Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Alexander Karsner, announced just over $23 million in federal funding, subject to negotiation of final project plans and funding, for five projects focused on developing highly efficient fermentative organisms to convert biomass material to ethanol. 27 March 2007.

Seventh RTD Framework Programme (FP7) On 24 July 2006 agreement was reached between Member States on the Seventh RTD Framework Programme (FP7) 2007-2013. This has to be endorsed by the European Parliament this Autumn (2006). The proposed budget is EUR 54.6 billion, or around EUR 7 billion per year for research compared to EUR 5 billion under FP6.

BIO-HUB – R&D base for a new French Biorefinery The president of the Republic of France, Jacques Chirac, presented on Tuesday 25 April details of the six research programmes that will be co-financed by the State and industries within the framework of the new Agency of Industrial Innovation. The six large research programs announced should mobilize almost 600 million euros, including at least 236 million provided by the State.
