Two US companies, Diversa & Celunol, involved in the development of bioethanol from cellulose have announced that they are to merge. This will generate a company with an integrated capacity to contribute along the complete production chain from pre-treatment, through enzyme development, fermentation technology, enginnering and project development to the formation of bio-refineries. The new company builds on Diversa’s capabilities in the development and manufacture of high-performance industrial enzymes and Celunol’s activities that include a pilot facility designed to produce up to 50,000 gallons of ethanol per year, that will expand to 1.4 million gallons upon completion of a larger-scale demonstration facility targeted for late 2007. The combined company will be headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts and have research and operations facilities in San Diego, California; Jennings, Louisiana; and Gainesville, Florida.
